A Month in Review: A New Spark in the Spring Thaw

This month has been a reset in a way I never expected. It has pushed me to take the reins and progress forward with renewed vigour in my creative practice. Increasingly, winter brings a slumber to my creative pursuits. My body wants to hibernate, my mind is darkened with the loss of daylight, and my soul tires beneath the cold that seeps to the bone. Yet in this time of thaw and reawakening, the fires that lay dormant through the winter, offering just enough warmth to smoulder through the cold, reignite to blazing infernos that require some taming before they become useful.

This month the blog has focused on the fires of creativity - what they look like, how they build our creative practice, ways we can fuel them and harness their raw power to work for us as we embark on creative projects and building a creative life. In doing so I have reignited my desire for my fiction. New ideas have taken root and that excitement has sparked a real plan for progress moving forward.

Friendly Fire Tending Reminders:

The size of the blaze does not equate to passion - The blazing inferno can denote passion for the project, it can also indicate scattered focus or overinflated excitement. When wildfire ignites it’s important to tend it, and tame it - bringing it back under control focuses the attention back to the project at hand and ensures that progress is made.

Fueling a fire starts with self care - If you want to fuel your creative fires you need to be taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional self. Take time for you first. While creativity can be a pathway of self care, it also takes energy and effort to maintain a practice. Ensuring your well is full is a commitment to tending the fires of your creativity and keeping control of them rather than being overwhelmed.

Tend the embers and the ash - As a creative project lulls, winds down, even dies, continue to tend the pit. Embers are smoldering, inspiration waiting for a new spark, coals burn hottest and make the most progress in silence, and ashes hold lessons learned. Examining these quieter moments of the creative process help us connect with our inner fire and manage our practice moving forward.

Our Stats:

Blog Posts - Have gone out weekly, albeit some a day later than usual. However, the goal is consistent, weekly posts and that has held steady. April’s theme has been decided and I am excited to dig into this intersectional idea that has been foundational to how I operate in life, creativity and professionally as well. More to come - so stay tuned!

Instagram - Posting frequency has dropped and my time has been pushed back. Thankfully this is due to a busy business that is picking up momentum, however I intend to reestablish the consistency I’ve come to enjoy speaking to you through the feed and sharing snippets of the creative journey as we move along.

Consumption of Creativity: Though reading has declined this month, which is a vast misfortune, binge watching has increased substantially. I was able to attend the Hadestown Touring show live in Hamilton which was an incredible performance and a great shared experience in the spirit of celebration and sibling engagement. Getting to share these pieces of creativity with others deepens connection and sparks conversation around not only what we consume, but our own creative practices and lives.

March has been a month of reignition and finding solace in self care. A season of learning rhythms and feeling out how a spring of creative abundance might unfold if fueled and cared for properly.
